This process turns the red bauxite rock into white alumina powder. The alumina is used in the smelting process to produce aluminium. Aluminium is strong, flexible, light-weight, durable, per cent recyclable.

It plays a crucial role in producing lighter vehicles and other forms of transport due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. Aluminium is resistant to corrosion and is recyclable, making it an increasingly popular choice in modern sustainable buildings. It is also widely used in machinery, packaging and electronics.

The alumina is then exported to smelters around the world. Bauxite is mined near the town of Boddington, kilometres south-east of Perth. It is transported by overland conveyor to the alumina refinery near Collie and turned into alumina powder, before being transported by rail to Bunbury Port.

Interest in bauxite mining in the South West of Australia stretches back to the s. Over the past three decades our production has increased four-fold, making Worsley Alumina one of the largest and lowest-cost alumina producers in the world. More than people are employed at the mine site and refinery. Many more jobs have been created through the employment of sub-contractors and through the support of local businesses and suppliers.

The Bunbury basalt has been dated at and Ma and overlies an erosional surface, thus marking the breakup of unconformity and volcanism in South Western Australia. It has been traced in the subsurface southwards and also offshore to the North East. Seismic evidence under the continental shelf between Perth and Bunbury shows that the Basalt flowed down an odd valley incising the continental margin. The Worsley mine has estimated reserves of mt. Bauxite is mined from reserves mainly within State forest on the eastern edge of the Darling Range, near Boddington.
